DAMNED STATEMENT

Statement

Being part of DAMNED has been one of the creative highpoints of my career as a circus performer, and is consistently the most fun event to perform at. Year after year these beautiful freaky folks put together one of Detroit's coolest events, and I feel so blessed to have played a part. Because the Enlightenment, Darkness, and Masquerade evenings each have a unique aesthetic and vibe, they allow performers like myself to explore a much broader creative space than is usually available to us. We get to be creepy, sexy, angry, strange, and anything else we're moved to be. We get to be ourselves... or someone else. We get to collaborate with other artists to create spontaneous performance pieces that only exist for a moment. Luckily someone usually gets a picture. In this aerial piece for the Enlightenment, my aim was to embody geometric ideals, fluid movement in space, and the sublime. Of course performing to Dixon's Violin made it easy to channel the sublime. The art, the music, the spectacle, but more than anything the people, make DAMNED my favorite place to be an artist.
