DAMNED STATEMENT

Statement

Since my first time at the event, DAMNED's stage has felt to have a hollowed energy to me. The space creates a presence that allows what many stages do not. The time I have been given on DAMNED's stage has allowed me to present some performances whose subject matter are deeply close to my heart. The performances not only give me the opportunity to speak to others, but to myself as well. This was ever true of Weight. In the piece, the character is continually crafting chain links together, placing each additional length over their shoulder until they can no longer stand. For me, this was a descriptor to the things we shoulder silently, build unto ourselves without asking for help. Aside from conceptual messages, the DAMNED stage is a place for warmth. In a piece my partner and I performed, a comforting character came to the aide of the collapsed character. The aiding character pulled a thread from their heart to help stitch the other's heart back together, lifting them to their feet as they did, thus bringing life back to them. This story was inspired by and a tribute to my Partners Father. He had worked for years with his partner after her stroke, caring for her and helping her recover so she could walk down the aisle at their wedding.
