DAMNED STATEMENT

Statement

Over the past 12 years, I have had the honor and privilege with working with some of Michigan’s wonderfully talented artists - dancers, painters, poets, illustrators, musicians, contortionists, aerialists, photographers, mimes, sculptors and the people behind the DAMNED event. It has been amazing and beautiful, and the friendships that have come out of that event have become lifelong friends. When I was asked 12 years ago to perform for a new event that was delving into the macabre, the mysterious and the dark art underworlds, I had no clue as to what I was going to do. The engineers/creators behind this event gave me full reign to jump into something I wasn’t quite clear on, that I possessed. Another side to SATORI CIRCUS. Prior to this time, I had always loved movement…slow, physical, surreal and far reaching…which for me was Butoh Movement. It had always intrigued me, but I never incorporated it into anything I was doing as SATORI CIRCUS, until DAMNED! Given the encouragement to develop something specifically for DAMNED, ignited my curiosity into movement and Butoh. Now granted, I am not a dancer by any means, but in being the type of performer I am who draws heavily on the physical and athleticism from sports and movement, I took what I do and did presently in my shorter pieces to create longer, intense movement pieces. From the very first time I hit the DAMNED stage in 2008 with a movement piece, I became addicted. DAMNED has allowed me as a performance artist and human, to go deep into my soul and personal history, enabling me to retell stories in a visceral and visual way I haven’t done in the past. It’s given me the opportunity to crawl deep inside and given me the latitude to go way outside a box I thought I was already way on the outside of. I cherish each and every DAMNED event and look forward to it so that I can stretch my boundaries and learn from each journey.
